Yasmin Side Effects & YAZ Side Effects

The most serious potential Yasmin side effects and YAZ side effects include:

  • deep vein thrombosis
  • gallbladder disease 
  • hepatic neoplasia (liver cancer)
  • hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • myocardial infarction ( heart attack) and other heart-related problems
  • stroke
  • thromboembolism [when a blood clot that formed in a blood vessel travels through the blood stream and plugs up another blood vessel in, for example, the lungs (a pulmonary embolism), the brain (a stroke), a leg or elsewhere]

Yasmin & Yaz Side Effects

While the above side effects are generally associated with all combined-hormone contraceptives, the risk from Yaz and Yasmin is reportedly much higher. Yasmin and Yaz birth control works by delivering two hormones — ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone (a synthetic progestin) — and in addition to the above-listed problems, there are a significant number of side effects that are more specific to Yasmin:

  • increas risk of stroke, heart attack and thrombatic events such as DVT and PE
  • a change in the pattern or severity of migraine headaches
  • chest pain or a heavy feeling in the chest
  • a general, unexplainable feeling of being ill
  • difficulty breathing
  • hives
  • jaundice
  • loss of appetite
  • mood changes unrelated to life event 
  • pain behind the eyes
  • pain spreading to the arm or shoulder
  • problems with vision, balance or speech
  • sleep problems
  • stomach pain
  • sudden numbness or weakness
  • swelling of the face, lips, throat, and/or tongue
  • unexplained confusion
  • unexplained nausea
  • unexplained sweating
