What is the Problem with Xarelto?

Xarelto, known generically as rivaroxaban, was launched in 2011 by Bayer and Johnson & Johnson. The companies marketed the blood thinner as an improvement over warfarin, an anticoagulant that has been used for decades. Xarelto is currently approved for the prevention of blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation, and to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The medication is also indicated to reduce the occurrence of blood clots in patients undergoing hip replacement surgery.

Xarelto has become a popular choice for patients who need anticoagulant therapy. By 2013, its global sales had already reached $1.3 billion.

Unfortunately, evidence is mounting that Xarelto may have played a role in hundreds of injuries and deaths. During the first 8 months of 2013, Germany’s Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices received 958 reports of complications where the medication was the suspected cause, including 72 fatalities. During the first quarter of that year, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration received 680 reports of serious complications involving Xarelto.

One of the major issues with this medication is the lack of an approved antidote to stop Xarelto bleeding. While warfarin can also cause serious internal bleeding, hemorrhaging associated with its use can be stopped via the administration of vitamin K.

Xarelto Injury Allegations

In June 2014, Reuters reported that a number of Xarelto lawsuits were already pending in U.S. courts. Court documents indicate that these claims were filed on behalf of individuals who allegedly suffered serious injuries due to Xarelto bleeding. A number of the cases were also filed by families who claim to have lost a loved as a result of such injuries.

Among other things, plaintiffs who have filed a Xarelto case accuse Bayer and Johnson & Johnson of failing to warn patients and doctors about the risk of uncontrollable bleeding, particularly the lack of an antidote for such an occurrence. They also allege that the drug was wrongly marketed as an improvement over warfarin, and that the benefits associated with Xarelto do not outweigh its risks.
