Vaginal Mesh
Transvaginal mesh is a surgical material used in pelvic floor repair procedures, such as Pelvic Organ Prolapse (“POP”), a common condition in which a woman’s uterus, bladder, or rectum changes position due to pregnancy or childbirth. Transvaginal mesh is also used to treat stress urinary incontinence, a type of incontinence caused by pressure on the bladder, resulting in leakage of urine during moments of physical stress. To treat these conditions, transvaginal mesh is surgically attached to or implanted in the vaginal wall; however it exposes women to an increased risk of serious and fatal injuries.
FDA Warnings Regarding Transvaginal Mesh
On July 13, 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) issued a safety communication advising doctors and patients to consider alternative treatments to transvaginal mesh, also known as pelvic mesh or vaginal mesh. At that time, the FDA also announced plans for an advisory panel meeting to determine whether transvaginal mesh should be removed from the market. The FDA’s transvaginal mesh warning stated that “with the exposure to greater risk comes no evidence of greater clinical benefit such as improved quality of life.”
As part of the FDA’s ongoing review, in September 2011, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Devices Advisory Panel to the FDA met to discuss whether transvaginal mesh should be reclassified so that manufacturers would be required to undergo rigorous clinical safety testing to continue marketing these products. The panel supported the FDA’s proposed requirement that any new transvaginal mesh devices undergo extensive safety testing before receiving approval.
Previously, in October 2008, the FDA issued a health advisory to patients and health practitioners about complications arising from transvaginal mesh. At that time, the FDA had received more than 1,000 reports from nine different transvaginal mesh manufacturers of complications associated with the devices. The advisory stated that complications from transvaginal mesh were “rare.” However, the July 13, 2011 warning from the FDA indicated that the number of complications was much higher than previously thought.
Transvaginal Mesh Complications
The transvaginal mesh complications most commonly reported to the FDA include erosion through the vaginal epithelium, painful sexual intercourse, infection, urinary problems, and recurrence of POP and/or incontinence.
Dangerous Transvaginal Mesh Brands
Because the transvaginal mesh FDA advisory encompasses many brands and models of transvaginal mesh, our transvaginal mesh lawyers have compiled a list of transvaginal mesh products that could have the potential to cause serious complications.
