Trasylol increased a user’s death risk but failed to disclose its findings to the FDA. Lawsuits note that a Bayer study looked at more than 78,000 patients from January 2003 through March 2006. The researchers concluded that Trasylol users have a 64% higher death risk than those who took a similar alternate drug. The lawsuits highlight that Bayer did not publicize this study or notify the FDA.

The lawsuits further allege that in January 2006, a study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine that concluded Trasylol use doubled kidney failure risks, increased heart attack risks by 50%, and increased stroke risks by 181%, compared to alternative drug use. After this study, Bayer still refused to pull Trasylol off the market until November 2007. In February 2008, Dr. Mangano, the author of the January 2006 Trasylol study, told “60 minutes? that if Bayer had removed the drug immediately after his study was published, approximately 431,000 patients would not have used the drug and 22,000 lives would have been saved.

Current Trasylol Lawsuits

Currently, about 78 Trasylol lawsuits were filed against Bayer. The Trasylol lawsuits allege that Bayer ignored studies that showed Trasylol was unsafe. The lawsuits further allege that Bayer also knew about Trasylol’s severe side effects, including its increased death risk, but failed to warn Trasylol users of such risks. Trasylol lawsuits allege that Trasylol is unreasonably unsafe since there are alternative drugs without the dangerous side effects that are just as effective.
