Trasylol and Heart Attacks

Trasylol users have a high risk of suffering a heart attack. A 2006 study Trasylolfound that Trasylol users have a 50 percent increased heart attack risk compared to patients taking a generic Trasylol alternative. There was no increased heart attack risk evident in the Trasylol generic alternatives Aminocaproic acid or Tranexamic acid. These generic medications are significantly cheaper than Trasylol and equally effective. Bayer, Trasylol’s manufacturer, dismisses the findings claiming their clinical studies show no increased heart attack risk for Trasylol users.

What is a Heart Attack?

Heart attacks occur when blood supply to the heart stops. This deprives the heart muscle cells of oxygen. Oxygen deprivation causes cell death in a process called infarction, which in turn causes heart tissue to die and stop the heart from functioning.

How does Trasylol Cause a Heart Attack?

Trasylol is used during open heart surgery to reduce blood loss. Trasylol destroys the anti-clotting enzymes in the blood. The destruction of these enzymes may lead to blood clots that block blood flow. A heart attack will occur if blood clots in the artery and blocks blood flow to the heart.
