Aprotinin and Kidney Failure

Aprotinin, manufactured by Bayer under the brand name Trasylol, is Trasylolinjected during open heart surgery to stem blood loss. In January 2006, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study that revealed Aprotinin significantly increases kidney failure risk. Researchers studied open heart surgery patients where some received Aprotinin, others received a generic Aprotinin alternative, and others did not receive any blood loss medication. The Aprotinin study revealed that Aprotinin users have double the kidney failure risk than those who take a generic drug or no blood loss medication.

How does Aprotinin Cause Kidney Failure?

Aprotinin prevents blood loss by destroying anti-blood clotting enzymes. This may cause blood clots in the blood vessels that lead to the kidneys. These blood clots stop hazardous wastes and fluids from reaching the kidneys and can lead to kidney failure.

Aprotinin Kidney Failure Symptoms

Aprotinin kidney failure symptoms may include:

  • Fluid retention
  • Reduced urine output
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite

Aprotinin Alternatives and Kidney Failure

The 2006 Aprotinin study found that Aminocaproic acid and Tranexamic acid users did not have an increased risk of kidney failure. Aminocaproic acid and Tranexamic acid are cheaper generic Aprotinin alternatives that are FDA approved to reduce blood loss. The study determined that using generic drugs instead of Aprotinin would prevent more than 11,050 kidney dialysis complications, save over a billion dollars of healthcare costs, and reduce worldwide medication costs by $250 million.
