On April 14, 2011, Johnson & Johnson (“J&J”) issued a Topamax recall of 57,000 bottles of the anti-seizure medication after receiving reports of an “uncharacteristic odor” emanating from the bottles. In a press release issued by J&J subsidiary, Ortho-McNeil Neurologics, the company stated that the cause of the odor was thought to be due to small amounts of the chemical 2,4,6-tribromomoanisole, TBA, which is applied to wooden pallets used to ship and store packaging materials. The Topamax recall involved two lots of 100mg Topamax tablets that were transported and distributed between October 19, 2010 and December 28, 2010 in the United States and Puerto Rico. Although the chemical is non-toxic, the odoriferous bottles involved in the Topamax recall can cause patients to suffer minor gastrointestinal symptoms. In March, quality control problems at McNeil caused the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) to issue an injunction against the company’s Fort Washington plant.

Topamax Recall Follows FDA Topamax Warning

The Topamax recall is not the first time the popular anticonvulsant drug has come under fire. Last month, the FDA issued a Topamax warning after determining that pregnant women who use Topamax have an increased risk of giving birth to babies with a cleft lip or cleft palate. In addition to issuing the Topamax warning, the FDA advised doctors not to prescribe the medication to pregnant women, or women of child-bearing age who are at a high risk of pregnancy, as Topamax side effects are likely to result when the drug is taken during the first trimester of pregnancy.
