Spiriva, an anticholinergic medication used to prevent bronchospasm (narrowing of the airways in the lungs) in people with bronchitis, emphysema, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), has been linked to several adverse side effects. Although most Spiriva side effects are mild, some Spiriva side effects may be life-threatening.

Mild Spiriva Side Effects

Mild Spiriva side effects may include:

  • dry mouth, cough, hoarseness
  • blurred vision
  • trouble swallowing
  • nausea, constipation, upset stomach
  • stuffy nose, nosebleed
  • fast heart rate
  • drowsiness
  • white patches in your mouth or throat

Dangerous Spiriva Side Effects

Some Spiriva side effects, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported to a doctor immediately. These dangerous side effects include, but are not limited to:

  • worsening breathing problems
  • severe constipation
  • difficulty passing urine
  • an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • vision changes
  • chest pain
  • signs of an allergic reaction, including unexplained rash, hives, itching, unexplained swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing or swallowing

In addition, a study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that heart attack, stroke, and death from heart disease may all be dangerous side effects of Spiriva. In fact, results from 29 clinical studies conducted by Spiriva’s own maker, Boehringer Ingelheim, suggest that Spiriva may increase the risk of stroke.

Rare Spiriva Side Effects

Rare Spiriva side effects occur in 1 to 3 percent of people taking Spiriva. Because these side effects are so uncommon, it is difficult to tell whether they are caused by Spiriva or something else. These rare Spiriva side effects include, but are not limited to:

  • leg pain
  • voice changes
  • unusual sensations, such as burning or tingling
  • gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • canker sores
  • high cholesterol
  • high blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
  • bone pain
  • depression
  • shingles
  • cataracts
