Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when one or more of the following pelvic organs drop (prolapse) from the normal position in the lower belly and push against the vaginal walls:
- bladder (the most common kind of pelvic organ prolapse)
- urethra
- uteru
- vagina
- small bowel
- rectum
Pelvic organ prolapse is most often caused by strain during childbirth. Normally the pelvic organs are kept in place by the muscles and tissues in the lower belly, but during childbirth, these muscles can get weak or become stretched. If the muscles don’t recover, they can no longer support the pelvic organs.
