Myelopathy

Myelopathy is a condition characterized by the gradual loss of nerve function caused by disorders of the spine.  Myelopathy can result in varying degrees of loss and sensation in movement and may possibly lead to permanent spinal cord damage.  Bone spurs may begin to press on the spinal cord and nerve roots, as well as other degenerative changes in the cervical spine that may squeeze the spinal cord, interfering with proper functioning of the nervous system.

Some symptoms of myelopathy include:

  • history of injury or malignancy
  • decreased strength
  • decreased sensation
  • imbalance
  • loss of coordination

Myelopathy has been linked to copper deficiency and high zinc levels in the blood.  Over-the-counter products have been linked to copper deficiency and zinc poisoning, including certain denture creams, such as Fixodent and PoliGrip.
