Copper Deficiency

Copper deficiency, or hypocupremia, is characterized by abnormally low levels of copper in the blood.  Copper is an essential element for good health, as it helps maintain a healthy heart and liver, bone strength and brain development.  Copper competes with zinc in the body's bloodstream and thus zinc poisoning can be a cause of copper deficiency. Copper deficiency can lead to serious neurologic disease as well as other serious problems.

Symptoms of copper deficiency may include:

  • abdominal pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • lethargy
  • anemia
  • dizziness
  • impaired brain function

Some over-the-counter products have been linked to zinc poisoning, including certain denture creams.  These denture creams include Fixodent and PoliGrip, and can lead to zinc poisoning and copper deficiency.  Many denture cream lawsuits have been filed relating to copper deficiency.
