Pulmonary Embolism

Pulmonary Embolism occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery in the lungs. Blood clots generally form in the legs and then can travel through the bloodstream to the lungs. A blood clot that travels to another location in the body is called an embolus. Thus, when an embolus travels to the lungs, the disorder is called pulmonary embolism.

Pulmonary embolisms typically consist of multiple blood clots in the lungs. Pulmonary embolisms are usually treated with blood thinners that prevent blood clots from forming. If a pulmonary embolism is life threatening, a doctor may prescribe a medication that actually dissolves existing blood clots.

Pulmonary Embolism symptoms include:

  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Chest pain (often mimics a heart attack)
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • A cough that produces bloody mucus

Pulmonary Embolisms are a severe and life threatening side effect of the Ortho Evra Birth Control Patch.
