Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML)
Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), also known as Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalitis, is a rare and usually fatal viral disease that is characterized by progressive damage or inflammation of the brain at multiple locations. PML is caused by a type of polyomavirus called the JC virus (JCV). Although this virus is widespread, with 86% of the general population presenting antibodies, it usually remains latent, causing PML only when the immune system has been severely weakened, such as by immunosuppressive medications or AIDS.
PML symptoms may include:
- weakness
- paralysis
- vision loss
- impaired speech
- cognitive deterioration
The FDA has reported a possible link between PML and the psoriasis medication Raptiva.
