Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF)
Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) is a condition that creates excessive tissue in the skin and internal organs. This leads to a build-up of thick and hard skin that severely restricts movement and bending of joints. In severely affected patients, NSF may restrict walking and confine patients to a wheelchair. Although NSF is not fatal, it can significantly contribute to death by restricting breathing and mobility. The development of NSF is common in patients with pre-existing kidney problems and renal failure.
Patients with NSF may experience:
- Difficulty breathing
- Muscle weakness
- Jaundice (yellow spots in the white of the eye)
- Deep pain in the hips and ribs
Reports find a causal connection between NSF and the use of gadolinium based contrast agents in MRIs in patients who are experiencing renal failure.
