Ischemic Colitis

Ischemic colitis (also known as colonic ischemia) is a condition in which your large intestine (colon) becomes inflamed and injured. Ischemic colitis occurs from reduced blood flow to the large intestine. The reduced blood flow can be chronic or sudden and brief. Ischemic colitis typically affects adults over 50 years of age. Ischemic colitis can cause serious damage to the large intestine and in extreme cases it can be fatal.

Ischemic Colitis symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain (usually on the left side of the body)
  • Fever
  • Bloody stools
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lower back pain

Ischemic colitis is generally treated with drug therapy. In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the affected part of the large intestine.

Ischemic colitis is a severe side effect of Zelnorm, a prescription medication that treats Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chronic Idiopathic Constipation.
