Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia

Thrombocytopenia is a serious side effect of Heparin. Heparin induced thrombocytopenia occurs when Heparin, a blood thinning medication, causes the blood platelet levels to drop below 150,000. Platelets are cells that clot the blood and a normal person has between 150,000 and 400,000 platelets. Excessive bleeding can occur if platelet levels drop below 150,000. Heparin induced thrombocytopenia can cause thrombosis, a blood clot inside a blood vessel or organ. Thrombosis causes clots in veins and arteries, and destruction of skin tissue. Patients with thrombocytopenia and thrombosis have a significant risk of forming blood clots that cause the loss of a limb.

It is difficult to treat Heparin induced thrombocytopenia and the damage may be irreversible. To treat thrombocytopenia, doctors advise to stop Heparin use and then, to avoid thrombosis, administer a non-Heparin blood thinner.
