The human heart contains four valves to prevent the backward flow of blood. The heart valves are flaps that open and close, allowing blood to flow into and out of the heart. Heart valve damage occurs in one of two ways; (1) when the valve does not completely close, which causes the blood to flow backwards (called regurgitation); or (2) when the valve opening becomes narrow or stiff, forcing the heart to pump blood with increased force (called stenosis). Heart valve damage can simultaneously affect more than one valve and may include regurgitation and stenosis.
