Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that forms in veins deep in the body. Most deep vein blood clots form in the thigh or lower leg but they can occur in other body parts. A deep vein blood clot can break off and travel through the bloodstream. When the clot travels to the lungs and block the blood flow, the condition is called pulmonary embolism, a serious and potentially fatal condition.

Only about half of the people with deep vein thrombosis show signs or symptoms of the condition. The signs or symptoms include swelling, tenderness, and redness of the leg affected by a deep vein clot. Deep vein thrombosis is typically treated with a blood thinning medication.

Deep vein thrombosis is a severe side effect of Ortho Evra, a popular birth control patch.
