Asbestosis

Asbestosis is a non-cancerous respiratory disorder caused from inhaling asbestos fibers. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they accumulate in the lungs, causing excessive lung tissue scarring. Typically, when foreign particles enter the lungs, the alveoli’s (microscopic air sacs in the lungs) immune cells attract the particles and expel them from the body. Asbestos fibers are extremely difficult to destroy, causing the immune cells to inflame and scar the alveoli. The alveoli’s inflammation and scarring prevents it from separating the oxygen and carbon dioxide. As a result, the lung’s air capacity and oxygen levels diminish, causing the lungs to become stiff and stop functioning.

Asbestosis is caused by long term exposure to asbestos fibers. Typically, asbestosis symptoms take 20 to 30 years to manifest. The symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing
  • Tightness in chest
  • Chest pain

There is no cure for asbestosis but treatments are available to help alleviate its symptoms. A lung transplant may be required in the most severe cases.
