Acanthamoeba Keratitis
Acanthamoeba Keratitis is a rare eye infection that causes an inflammation of the cornea, the membrane that covers the eye’s iris (colored part) and pupil. Acanthamoeba Keratitis is caused by amoebas (single cell organisms) that enter into and infect the eye. Typically, Acanthamoeba Keratitis occurs in healthy adults or children that wear contact lenses. When the lenses come in contact with water, the amoebas that cause the infections can become stuck in the contact lenses. Several eye medications are available for treatment; however, the more severe cases may lead to vision loss and blindness.
