Asbestos & the Foss Launch and Tug Company

As an older industrial ship company and shipyard, the Foss Launch and Tug Company worked with vessels that were rife with asbestos. Asbestos was used extensively in Foss Launch and Tug Company shipyard operations prior to the discovery of its health dangers in the 1980s. Asbestos was used in various areas of the ships including:

  • Boilers
  • Turbines
  • Electrical and plumbing insulation
  • Pumps
  • Steam pipe
  • Incinerators
  • Gaskets
  • Valves
  • Welding blankets
  • Building insulation

Ship workers at the Foss Launch and Tug Company often engaged in ship repair with asbestos products and worked in older vessels built with asbestos. While today the U.S. government regulates asbestos in the shipyard industry, older ships may still contain asbestos. Foss Launch and Tug workers have likely been exposed to asbestos in recent years through the repair of older ships.

When shipyard workers use asbestos containing materials, a fibrous dust is released into the air. When inhaled or ingested, asbestos fibers can become lodged in the lungs or the protective lining of many of the body’s organs and cause severe and fatal diseases. Some of these serious diseases include:

  • Mesothelioma (a cancer of the protective lining that covers most of the body’s internal organs, including the lungs)
  • Lung cancer
  • Asbestosis (lung tissue scarring)
  • Cancer in other organs

If you think you have been exposed to asbestos at the Foss Launch and Tug Company, speak to your physician right away. Many asbestos diseases can take years to become symptomatic and an early diagnosis can help better manage some of them.
