Asbestos & The American Bridge Shipyard
Unfortunately, many American Bridge Shipyard workers were exposed to asbestos, causing them to suffer severe and fatal diseases including Mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer. Before asbestos hazards became known in the 1980s, asbestos was used extensively in shipyard operations at the American Bridge Shipyard. As an ideal insulator, asbestos was used in boilers, steam pipes, incinerators, and other ship equipment.
American Bridge Shipyard workers are at risk of suffering from serious health complications from asbestos exposure. Asbestos exposure is linked to many dangerous health conditions, most notably Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a cancer of the protective lining that covers most of the body’s internal organs, including the heart, stomach, and lungs. When asbestos is inhaled or ingested, it invades this lining and disrupts the protection of these vital organs.
American Bridge Shipyard workers exposed to asbestos may have brought the dust home to their families. Asbestos dust can often adhere to hair, clothing, and shoes. As a result, spouses and children of American Bridge Shipyard workers may have been indirectly exposed to asbestos.
