The GMD shipyard, GMD Group’s subsidiary, is located in the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City. The GMD shipyard is the largest dry dock facility in New York City. The GMD shipyard employs hundreds of workers and is open 24 hours.

GMD Shipyard Asbestos

Asbestos, a toxic fibrous mineral, causes fatal diseases when its airborne and inhaled. Asbestos fibers become permanently wedged in the lungs causing severe and fatal cancers including Mesothelioma (a rare cancer in the lung’s inner lining) and asbestosis (lung tissue scarring).

Asbestos was ideal material for ship building and products because it is water and fire resistant. Asbestos is used in the vessel’s insulation, siding, and many products including:

  • Gaskets
  • Turbines
  • Pumps
  • Boilers

Unfortunately, GMD Shipyard employees, like all shipyard workers, had greater exposure to asbestos. Asbestos fibers become airborne when asbestos containing materials are repaired or replaced. GMD Shipyard’s workers were unaware of asbestos dangers so they worked in poorly ventilated areas without protective clothing and respiratory gear. Many workers inhaled asbestos fibers and became terminally ill.

GMD Shipyard History

The GMD Shipyard and the Brooklyn Navy Yard were instrumental to the U.S. Navy during the Second World War. Hundreds of war ships were constructed and repaired at the GMD Shipyard. In 1966, the U.S. Navy decommissioned the GMD Shipyard and the Brooklyn Navy Yard and sold them to New York City. New York City converted the Brooklyn Navy Yard into industrial space but retained the GMD shipyard.
