Renu Moistureloc, which was approved by the FDA in 2004, was a multipurpose contact solution used to rinse, disinfect, and store contact lenses. Unlike other contact solutions, Renu Moistureloc had a unique ability to keep contact lenses moist for added comfort. However, in 2006, Renu Moistureloc was permanently recalled after it was linked to serious side effects.

Renu Moistureloc Serious Side Effect: Fusarium Keratitis

The most severe side effect associated with Renu Moistureloc is fusarium keratitis, a serious fungal eye infection that can destroy the cornea. When a patient contracts this side effect, fungus slowly grows in the cornea and spreads to other layers of the eye, causing an infection. Although fusarium keratitis is rare, this Renu Moistureloc side effect is extremely painful and can lead to blindness if left untreated. Side effects of fusarium keratitis include:

  • Pain or inflammation of the eye
  • Unusual sensitivity to light
  • Blurred vision
  • Pus discharge from the eye
  • Severe eye discomfort and pain
  • Corneal scarring
  • Blindness
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Ulcers
  • Necrosis

Some Renu Moistureloc users may be more susceptible to developing fusarium keratitis as a side effect than others. For example, people with immune system problems, chronic eye diseases, and eye trauma are at a greater risk for developing this side effect than people with no history of immune system or eye problems. Because this side effect may be hard to distinguish from other, less serious side effects, contact lens wearers should remove their lenses and see a doctor if they develop any of the following side effects:

  • Sudden blurred or fuzzy vision
  • Red/irritated eyes lasting for an unusually long period of time after removal of the contact lens
  • Pain in and around the eyes
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Excessive eye tearing or discharge

To avoid serious side effects from contact lens use, take these precautions:

    1. Always wash your hands before handling contact lenses 2. Carefully and regularly clean contact lenses 3. Store lenses in a clean and proper case and replace the case every three months 4. Use only cleaning products recommended by your optometrist5. Never re-use old solution6. Replace contact lenses as prescribed by your doctor
