A new study finds that the risk of Pradaxa side effects such as excessive bleeding may negate its potential benefits. In a study published in The Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers analyzed databases of more than 30,000 patients with acute coronary syndrome (“ACS”) who received either blood thinners such as Pradaxa, or a placebo drug. The study found that taking Pradaxa or another blood-thinner tripled the risk of excessive bleeding, but only a modest reduction of stent thrombosis or further heart problems. In addition, there was no significant improvement in patient survival from taking the blood-thinning drugs. Researchers concluded that the use of direct thrombin inhibitors such as Pradaxa “provided no advantage over the placebo,” and were “associated with a dramatic increase in major bleeding events.”

The new study reinforces rising concerns over serious Pradaxa side effects such as excessive bleeding. The drug received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) approval in October 2010 to reduce the risk of stroke and embolism in atrial fibrillation patients. It was the first anti-coagulant to be introduced in the U.S. in over 50 years, and was marketed to be an improvement over its predecessor, warfarin. But while both Pradaxa and warfarin carry the risk of causing uncontrolled bleeding in patients, there is no antidote to Pradaxa’s blood thinning effects, making Pradaxa side effects far more deadly. The FDA is currently investigating reports of serious Pradaxa injuries. The agency has received over 500 reports of Pradaxa deaths in the U.S. as of December 31, 2011.

Patients who were injured as a result of taking Pradaxa are filing Pradaxa lawsuits to seek compensation. Federal Pradaxa lawsuits have been consolidated in a multidistrict litigation in the Southern District Court of Illinois. These lawsuits allege that the drug’s manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., failed to warn patients about the potential risks of taking Pradaxa, and the lack of a reversal method for its dangerous side effects. Victims who experienced Pradaxa side effects are seeking compensation for their medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other injuries.
