NuvaRing is a contraceptive vaginal ring manufactured by Merck subsidiaries Organon Pharmaceuticals USA Inc., Organon USA Inc., Organon International Inc., Schering Plough Corp., and Akzo Nobel NV.  Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) in October 2001, NuvaRing was the first monthly contraceptive ring approved for birth control.  Recent medical studies have linked NuvaRing to a number of serious and fatal injuries.  NuvaRing side effects include:

  • blood clots
  • stroke
  • heart attack
  • deep vein thrombosis
  • pulmonary embolism
  • sudden death

Understanding NuvaRing Side Effects

NuvaRing is a hormonal contraceptive device in the form of a small, flexible ring that is designed to be inserted into the vagina once a month. It is kept in place for three weeks, and prevents pregnancy by releasing controlled amounts of estrogen and progestin over the course of 21 days.

These hormones may lead to serious side effects of NuvaRing. Etonogestrel is a synthetic form of desogestrel, a third-generation progestin. In February 2007, the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen petitioned the FDA to ban oral birth control pills that contain desogestrel because they doubled the risk of blood clots. Although NuvaRing contains a lower hormone dose than most oral contraceptives, the ring’s dosage is directly absorbed into the bloodstream, while the oral birth control pills lose up to half of their hormones in the digestive track.

Side Effects Of NuvaRing Include High Risk Blood Clots

In October 2011, the FDA published a study that compared different methods of hormonal birth control. The study found that NuvaRing raised the risk of blood clots by 56 percent, compared to older birth control pills. According to the study, combined hormonal contraceptives such as NuvaRing “potentially result in higher sustained exposure to estrogen and hence, increased thromboembolic risk.” NuvaRing side effects found in the study include deep vein thrombosis (“DVT”) and pulmonary embolism, as well as an increased risk of arterial thrombotic events such as heart attacks and strokes.

Symptoms of venous thrombosis, or blood clot, include:

  • pain;
  • swelling; and
  • redness in the affected extremity.

When the blood clot travels from the site of its formation to block blood flow at a different location, venous thromboembolism occurs. Venous thrombosis can lead to the potentially fatal complication of pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism occurs when the blood clot travels to the lungs, causing shortness of breath from a loss of lung function.

Serious NuvaRing Side Effects Lead To Mounting Litigation

Individuals suffering from the dangerous side effects of NuvaRing should consider filing a NuvaRing lawsuit. Currently, Merck is defending more than 950 NuvaRing lawsuits filed by plaintiffs who allege that their injuries came from their use of the NuvaRing contraceptive device. All federal NuvaRing lawsuits have been consolidated in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri as part of a multidistrict litigation. Additional cases have been filed in other state court systems.
