San Francisco Jury Awards Mesothelioma Victim $20 Million

A San Francisco jury recently awarded $20 million in damages to a woman who was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2006. Georgia Pacific Corp., an asbestos manufacturer, was ordered to pay 30 percent of the verdict, or approximately $7 million, for exposing Joan Mahoney, a onetime film actress and singer, to the asbestos fibers that caused her terminal cancer.
Joan Mahoney was exposed to asbestos fibers while working in a home remodeling business with her husband, Daniel Mahoney. Joan and Daniel Mahoney sued asbestos manufacturer Georgia Pacific Corp. shortly after Joan Mahoney was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a type of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. At the time of her mesothelioma diagnosis, Joan Mahoney was told she had nine months to live.
The Mahoneys started a part-time home remodeling business in the late 1960s, during which time they were exposed to asbestos from numerous products, including an asbestos compound made by Georgia Pacific Corp. According to Joan Mahoney’s lawsuit, Georgia Pacific Corp. continued making an asbestos compound used for filling cracks in sheetrock even after the company learned of its dangers and other companies began using substitutes.
Because Georgia Pacific was the only defendant in the lawsuit, the remaining 70 percent of the jury award will remain unpaid. However, Joan Mahoney reached out-of-court settlements with other companies responsible for her asbestos exposure. Joan Mahoney, who is now 69 and lives in South Lake Tahoe, was quoted saying, "I'm happy that in the last part of my life, I've been able to make a difference in the corporate conduct of Georgia Pacific.�
