Patients who allegedly suffered metal-on-metal hip injuries are proving there is strength in numbers when it comes to speaking out about implants now at the center of DePuy ASR lawsuit claims and Wright Medical lawsuits.

According to a June 10th report in Florida’s Daytona Beach News-Journal, the latest metal hip recipient to be profiled about her alleged suffering remembers the first indication that something was wrong was when she started  “squeaking like a tin man” while shopping in her favorite store. “I sounded like I needed WD-40,” she said.

Blood tests and X-rays soon followed, revealing high levels of cobalt and chromium in her blood stream. Both of her hips, which were manufactured by Wright Medical Inc., were later removed and replaced. The pain this patient has experienced since her revision surgery has since robbed her of her golden years, she says.

“We are supposed to be in the RV right now,” the Port Orange woman said. “It ruined our retirement.

According to the News-Journal, the metal hip implant allegedly causing this patient’s injuries was manufactured by Wright Medical Inc., a company facing a growing number of lawsuits over its Wright Conserve device.

As Patients Speak Out about Injuries, Number of DePuy ASR Lawsuit Claims, Wright Medical Lawsuits Grows in U.S. Courts

Many of the claims filed over the Wright Conserve Total Hip Implant System, Conserve Total A-Class Advanced Metal Hip Implant System, and the Conserve Resurfacing System are now pending in a multidistrict litigation underway in the Northern District of Georgia. (In re: Wright Medical Technology, Inc., Conserve Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2329).

A regulatory filing dated April 30th indicated more claims over the hip replacement have been filed in a California state litigation as well.

Further, Wright Medical said in the regulatory filing that sales of its Profemur hip may decline, given its design similarities to the now-recalled Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck hip stems.

Plaintiffs in Wright Conserve and Profemur lawsuits allege injuries resulting from the accumulation of metal ions in recipients of the device.

Meanwhile, federal metal-on-metal hip litigations are underway in courts throughout the U.S. As of May 2013, over 10,000 DePuy ASR lawsuit claims had been filed in the Northern District of Ohio, (In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. ASR Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation – MDL 2197) over the metal-on-metal ASR hip replacement system manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics.

These cases allege early hip failure, metallosis and other complications stemming from the devices.
