Ethex Corp. and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall of the following five generic medications:
The recall was issued because a manufacturing defect may have caused oversized tablets to be distributed to the public. The recalled oversized tablets may contain more than the intended levels of the active drug ingredient, which could result in patients receiving as much as twice the expected dose. A double-strength overdose of any one of these recalled medications poses a serious risk of serious or life-threatening side effects.
Side effects of a Propafenone HCl overdose can include arrhythmias and low blood pressure. With Isosorbide Mononitrate, an overdose may cause fainting and low blood pressure. Respiratory depression and low blood pressure are potential side effects of a Morphine Sulfate overdose, and rapid heart rate and high blood pressure are side effects of a Dextroamphetamine Sulfate overdose. The FDA recommends that patients who experience any adverse reactions to these drugs contact their healthcare professional immediately.
According to Ethex and the FDA, the lots involved in the recall were all shipped prior to May 22, 2008. Ethex Corporation has notified wholesalers and retailers with instructions for returning the recalled products, including instructions for the retailers and pharmacies to contact consumers who were dispensed the recalled drugs for replacement of the product and/or refund.
