Hydroxycut is an over-the-counter dietary supplement that is used for weight loss, as a fat-burner, as an energy-enhancer, as a low-carb diet aid, and for water loss. Hydroxycut’s manufacturer, Iovate Health Sciences, Inc., is not required to seek Food and Drug Administration approval for its products because they are dietary supplements.

Recently there have been numerous reports of Hydroxycut side effects. As of May 2009, 23 Hydroxycut users have complained to the FDA of liver damage caused by the supplement. Consumers have reported problems ranging from elevated liver enzymes and jaundice to liver damage requiring transplant. In 2007, a 19 year old Hydroxycut user died of liver failure. Further, two class action lawsuits have been filed, in Tennessee and Canada, alleging that Iovate failed to warn consumers of the risk of injury and that the manufacturer acted negligently. Individual suits have also been filed.

On May 1, 2009, the FDA issued a warning about Hydroxycut products, stating that they have been linked to instances of liver damage and other health problems. The warning recommends that consumers stop taking the supplement in order to avoid the risk of Hydroxycut side effects. The FDA has not yet determined which specific ingredients or doses are associated with liver problems.

Possible signs of liver damage include:

  • Brown urine
  • Nausea
  • Weakness
  • Itching
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Stomach or abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Light-colored stool

Hydroxycut side effects may also include other health problems, such as seizures, cardiovascular disorders, heart failure, and rhabdomyolysis, a condition which causes muscle fibers to break down and enter the bloodstream and can lead to kidney failure.
