Fosamax Warnings

Fosamax is a bisphosphonate medication used to treat the bone loss and weakness characteristic of osteoporosis and other bone conditions. While patients began complaining of debilitating Fosamax side effects in 2000, the growing number of patient complaints over recent years has led the FDA to issue strict Fosamax warnings to patients and medical professionals alike. Doctors and patients have been urged to monitor for symptoms of Fosamax side effects like osteonecrosis, musculoskeletal pain and heart irregularities.

Fosamax Warning on ONJ

Studies have linked Fosamax use to an increased risk of a serious condition known as Osteonecrosis of the Jaw, or ONJ. Also known as "dead jaw," ONJ is a bone disease in which lack of blood flow causes the deterioration of the jawbones. If left untreated, ONJ can cause the permanent collapse of the jawbones.

taking Fosamax should seek immediate medical treatment if they start experiencing ONJ symptoms, which include:

  • jaw pain, numbness and/or sensitivity
  • inflammation in the gums or jaws
  • loose teeth
  • jawbone exposure
  • oral infections

Unfortunately, osteonecrosis of the jaw is incurable once it has moved past its initial stages. In most cases, osteonecrosis patients will be treated with antibiotics, dental implants (to cover exposed jawbones) and/or surgery to prevent further progression of ONJ.

Fosamax Warning on Atrial Fibrillation

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Washington suggests that women who take Fosamax are twice as likely to develop a serious and potentially permanent heart condition known as atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation is characterized by irregular heart rhythms and symptoms include:

  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • fainting

Patients who are taking Fosamax and experience any of these symptoms should consult a physician as soon as possible.

An Obligation To Issue Sufficient Fosamax Warnings

Drug makers and the FDA both have an obligation to provide sufficient warnings regarding drug side effects. Failure to meet this obligation can result in significant harm to patients.

In recent years, numerous individuals have been harmed by Fosamax. If you have experienced a serious Fosamax side effect, you may be able to take legal action to recover your losses. Contact us today to learn more.
