A common illness caused by tainted food products is salmonella food poisoning. About 40,000 cases of salmonella symptoms are reported each year to the CDC, while the number of unreported Salmonella cases could be potentially 30 times more. Salmonella Food Poisoning Symptoms
Salmonella can come from a number of sources, including ill-prepared and undercooked poultry, beef and pork, contaminated eggs and milk, and tainted fruits and vegetables. Additionally, some animals, particularly reptiles such as turtles, lizards and snakes, can carry the bacteria on their skin. Salmonella symptoms typically develop within 12 to 72 hours of infection. Most people suffering from salmonella symptoms will be ill from 4 to 7 days, but can recover without significant salmonella treatment other than fluids. However, in some cases, salmonella symptoms may intensify to diarrhea so severe it may require hospitalization due to dehydration. If the salmonella bacteria spreads from the intestines to the blood stream, serious complications and salmonella food poisoning symptoms may arise with fatal results in some cases.
