Fleet Phospho Soda Kidney Damage
The FDA has confirmed that at least 21 people have developed the life-threatening kidney condition known as acute phosphate nephropathy after using oral sodium phosphate solutions like Fleet Phospho Soda. Also referred to as Acute Nephrocacinosis, acute phosphate nephropathy can lead to renal failure and may require dialysis or a kidney transplant to treat.
In December 2008, the FDA announced that a black box warning would be added to prescription oral sodium phosphate bowel cleansers. At that time, the agency also indicated that over-the-counter laxatives, such as Fleet Phospho Soda, should not be used in high doses for bowel preparation and should only be available by prescription. Following this announcement, C.B. Fleet issued a Fleet Phospho Soda recall withdrawing all over-the-counter Fleet Phospho Soda products from the market.
