Denture Cream Poisoning Treatment

Recent studies have revealed that excess zinc contained in denture creams, such as Fixodent and Poligrip, may lead to denture cream poisoning. Without treatment, denture cream poisoning can lead to copper deficiency, a serious neurological disorder called neuropathy, and even death.

Because denture cream poisoning can cause several medical conditions, denture cream poisoning treatment first requires a proper diagnosis. Simple blood tests for zinc and copper levels can determine whether someone is suffering from zinc toxicity and/or copper deficiency. Neuropathy, however, may be more difficult to diagnose because it isn’t a single disease, but rather a symptom of numerous potential causes. To diagnose neuropathy, a doctor will typically perform a full physical and neurological exam. A doctor may also request blood tests, a urinalysis, thyroid function tests and electromyography (a test that measures the electrical discharges produced in your muscles). 

If a doctor determines that zinc contained in denture creams is

contributing to a patient’s symptoms, denture cream poisoning treatment will probably include switching to a brand of denture cream without zinc. Additionally, copper supplements will most likely be prescribed for patients with copper deficiency. Patients with neuropathy may also be prescribed pain relievers, antidepressants, and/or anti-seizure medications.

Denture Cream Poisoning Treatment Study

A study published in the August 2008 edition of the journal Neurology suggests that available denture cream poisoning treatments may not completely cure patients of their symptoms. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, reported on four denture-wearing patients suffering from neuropathy and other neurological side effects. All four patients had abnormally high levels of zinc in their blood, accompanied by abnormally low levels of copper.

To treat symptoms, one patient took copper supplements but didn’t stop using denture cream. While his copper levels improved, his zinc levels remained too high and his neurological symptoms did not improve. A second patient who took copper supplements and stopped using denture cream showed improvement in copper and zinc levels but no improvement in neurological symptoms. The remaining two patients only showed “mild neurologic improvement” after quitting denture cream and taking copper supplements.
