A study published in the August 2008 edition of the journal Neurology is prompting calls for a Fixodent recall. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, reported on four denture-wearing patients suffering from neuropathy and other neurological side effects. All four patients had abnormally high levels of zinc in their blood, accompanied by abnormally low levels of copper. After ruling out other possible causes, researchers in the study concluded that zinc contained in denture cream may have been causing the patients’ symptoms.
Why a Fixodent Recall is Needed
Because no Fixodent recall has been issued, millions of Americans continue to use denture creams containing zinc. Many of these people are unaware of the link between denture creams and serious complications, such as zinc poisoning and neuropathy, as the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) does not require denture cream manufacturers to warn the public about these potential denture cream side effects. In fact, the Fixodent label does not even identify zinc as an ingredient contained in the adhesive.
