In August 2008, a study published in the journal Neurology reported on four patients who suffered neuropathy and other neurological side effects associated with zinc poisoning. All four patients used Fixodent, Poligrip, or some other brand of denture adhesive cream that contained zinc.

According to the study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, the patients’ zinc poisoning was due to excessive intake of zinc from use of Fixodent, Poligrip, or some other denture cream. Specifically, the study noted that while one tube of Fixodent or Poligrip should last 3 to 10 weeks, patients in the report were all using at least two tubes of denture cream a week.

Poor Fitting Dentures – Potentially Higher Risk of Fixodent Zinc Poisoning and Poligrip Zinc Poisoning

People with poorly fitting dentures sometimes use large amounts of Fixodent or Poligrip to fix the problem. Unfortunately, these people are often unaware of the risk of zinc poisoning, as the Fixodent and Poligrip labels don’t contain warnings about zinc poisoning.

To help prevent Fixodent zinc poisoning or Poligrip zinc poisoning, patients with poorly fitting dentures should seek professional help, and possibly have their dentures replaced, instead of using more denture cream. Additionally, people with dentures should see their dentist at least once a year to make sure their dentures are fitting properly.
