Denture creams, which are used by millions of Americans to hold their dentures in place, have recently been linked to Hyperzincemia. Also known as zinc toxicity, Hyperzincemia refers to an abnormally high concentration of zinc in the blood.

Many denture creams, including Fixodent and Super Poligrip, contain the mineral zinc. Although zinc is an essential part of a healthy diet, excessive zinc intake can lead to serious side effects and even death. Symptoms of Hyperzincemia caused by denture creams may include:

  • abdominal pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • lethargy
  • anemia
  • dizziness

In addition to causing uncomfortable side effects, Hyperzincemia may lead to other serious conditions, including a neurological disorder called neuropathy. Diagnosing Hyperzincemia requires testing the blood for high zinc levels. Once diagnosed, Hyperzincemia treatment typically involves eliminating the source of the excessive zinc intake and treating symptoms.

Denture Cream Hyperzincemia Study

In August 2008, a study published in the journal Neurology titled, “An unusual source of excess zinc, leading to hypocupremia and neurologic disease,” reported on four patients who suffered neuropathy and other neurological side effects associated with Hyperzincemia. All four patients were denture cream users.

According to the study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, the patients’ Hyperzincemia was caused by excessive zinc intake through use of denture creams. The study noted that while one tube of denture cream should last 3 to 10 weeks, patients in the study were all using at least two tubes of denture cream a week.

Our denture cream lawyers believe that denture cream manufacturers should be held accountable for their failure to warn consumers of the risk of Hyperzincemia and other serious side effects of denture cream.
