Cystoceles are protrusions of the bladder into the vaginal canal that typically occur when pelvic muscles are weakened from childbirth, surgery, or some other condition.
Transvaginal mesh is used to repair cystoceles where symptoms are severe and nonsurgical treatments are unsuccessful. The mesh is inserted through the vagina using minimally invasive techniques and acts as a barrier to hold the bladder in place, preventing any painful slipping from its normal position in the pelvis.
Common symptoms of a cystocele include pelvic or vaginal fullness, pressure, and a sensation of organs falling out. Organs may bulge into the vaginal canal or introitus, particularly during straining or coughing. <

Transvaginal placement of surgical mesh to repair cystoceles has recently been linked to several serious complications. According to an FDA warning, more than 1,000 women have reported developing one (or more) transvaginal mesh complications over the last three years. The most frequently-reported complications include:
Other transvaginal mesh complications may be caused during insertion of the mesh. These complications may include bowel, bladder, and blood vessel perforation. In some cases, discomfort and pain (including dyspareunia) from vaginal scarring and vaginal mesh erosion could lead to a significant decrease in patient quality of life. Treatment of the various types of transvaginal mesh complications may require additional surgical procedures (some of them to remove the mesh), IV therapy, blood transfusions, and drainage of hematomas or abscesses
