Darvon & Darvocet Lawsuit

In 2008, the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen filed a lawsuit against the FDA alleging that the agency violated the law by failing to act on a petition filed in 2006, which urged the FDA to recall Darvocet, Darvon and other drugs containing propoxyphene from the market.

According to Public Citizen’s lawsuit, more than 2,000 accidental deaths have been linked to Darvon and Darvocet since 1981. The lawsuit also alleges that Darvon and Darvocet are physically addictive and are no more effective than other safer painkillers, like ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

In response to the allegations made in Public Citizen’s lawsuit, an advisory panel to the FDA initiated an investigation into the safety of Darvon and Darvocet. In early 2009, the advisory panel concluded that the dangers associated with Darvon and Darvocet outweigh the benefits and the drugs should therefore be recalled.
