American Diabetes Association Advises Against Using Avandia for Type 2 Diabetes

Due to safety concerns, both the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes have unanimously advised against using Avandia. Avandia, which is prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes, has recently been linked to several serious and life-threatening side effects.

Avandia

Recent Avandia studies have revealed potential links between Avandia use and heart attacks. For example, a wide-ranging June 2007 New England Journal of Medicine study, involving approximately 28,000 people, compared Avandia patients with patients using alternative regimens, including placebos. The study revealed that the risk of heart attack was 43 percent greater for patients taking Avandia than those who did not take it. The study also found a 64 percent increased risk of death from heart-related problems while using Avandia.

Some research has shown that Avandia may be capable of provoking heart attacks or death from heart complications after relatively short-term usage in diabetics who are already at risk for these complications. Avandia patients who already suffer from heart failure or other serious heart problems are especially at risk.

Other serious side effects linked to Avandia include stroke, weight gain and liver toxicity. Additionally, Avandia may increase the risk of bone fractures. On February 20, 2007, the FDA reported that results of an Avandia study found that, “Significantly more female patients who received rosiglitazone [Avandia] experienced fractures of the upper arm, hand, or foot, than did female patients who received either metformin or glyburide [other type 2 diabetes medications].?

While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet issued an Avandia recall, the agency has asked GlaxoSmithKline, Avandia’s maker, to include a black box warning on the Avandia label.
