If you or a man you love developed male breast growth, a condition known as gynecomastia, after taking the antipsychotic drug Risperdal, you may be eligible to file a Risperdal lawsuit seeking compensation for the pain, suffering and embarrassment this situation has caused. A growing number of lawsuits are being filed on behalf of men and boys who allegedly developed gynecomastia, which may have resulted in lactation, liposuction and mastectomy procedures to remove breast tissue allegedly caused by their use of Risperdal. Court records indicate that Risperdal settlements have already been reached in some cases.

In addition to their active investigation of potential Risperdal lawsuits, the attorneys at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are also offering free and confidential Invega lawsuit evaluations to individuals who allegedly developed the same condition while taking another antipsychotic manufactured by the Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. Risperdal lawyers at the Firm are standing by to answer any legal questions you have about cases involving either of these medications.

Who Can File a Risperdal Lawsuit?

Men or boys who developed gynecomastia after taking Risperdal, a drug marketed by Janssen may be eligible to file claims against the manufacturer. Approved to treat irritability in children ages 5-to-16 with autism, as well as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adolescents and adults, Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic medication. Off-label use of the drug sometimes includes the treatment of ADHD.

Since its U.S. approval in 1993, however, Risperdal has been linked to movement disorders and diabetes, in addition to gynecomastia.

A wave of research linking use of the medication to breast development has been published in the U.S. The Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, for example, released a report in 2006 that found high levels of a hormone associated with female breast development in some children taking Risperdal.

In 2009, the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology published research suggesting that elevated levels of the hormone prolactin could last up to two years in individuals taking Risperdal, which targets serotonin and dopamine receptors in the brain.

In co-ordinance with these findings, several Risperdal lawsuits have been filed in U.S. courts against Johnson & Johnson and its Janssen unit. Plaintiffs involved in these cases allege they were aware of the risks associated with Risperdal, but concealed that information from the public. So far, no Risperdal class action lawsuits have been filed, but an October 2012 report from Bloomberg.com revealed that companies had begun settling some individual Risperdal lawsuit claims that had been filed in a state proceeding established in Pennsylvania State Court.

Risperdal Gynecomastia Lawsuit Allegations

The following symptoms have been associated with Risperdal gynecomastia, and have been alleged in a growing number of lawsuits over the medication:

  • Swollen breast tissue
  • Tenderness in the breast
  • Pain in the breast
  • Nipple discharge from one or both breasts

As plaintiffs who allegedly experienced these side effects continue to come forward, Johnson & Johnson’s marketing of Risperdal and some other drugs has come under fire recently. In 2012, an article from the Wall Street Journal indicated that the manufacturer reportedly settled charges with the federal government over its marketing of the medication, but threatened to end a $212 million deal with the U.S. Department of Justice in the summer of 2013. The organization wanted Johnson & Johnson and Janssen to acknowledge its minimization of Risperdal’s side effects, which include its association with heightened prolactin levels in children.

The Wall Street Journal report states that Johnson & Johnson’s hesitation about the settlement agreement derived from concerns about the affect it would have on Risperdal lawsuits.
