Bad Robot Surgery Complications

Since the da Vinci Surgical System first entered the market in 2000, its use in prostate removals, hysterectomies, gall bladder removals and heart procedures has grown significantly.

Bloomberg.com recently reported that in 2010, the device was used in 228,000 operations. By 2011, that number had jumped to about 367,000. According to a health care industry analyst quoted in the Bloomberg.com article, patient demand spurred by hospital marketing may have partially contributed to this growth.

The following bad robot surgery complications have been named in da Vinci Surgery Robot lawsuits and adverse event reports filed with the FDA:

  • Surgical burns and tears to arteries and other blood vessels
  • Surgical burns and tears to vital organs
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Cut ureters
  • Bowel Injuries
  • Death

Bad robot surgery complications stemming from use of the da Vinci Surgery Robot have led to 70 deaths since 2009, Bloomberg.com stated.

What’s more, the da Vinci Surgery Robot may prove costly for hospitals. The estimated cost of the device weighs in at an estimated $1 million to $2.25 million, with annual maintenance expenses tagged at around $140,000 per year.

Bad Robot Surgery Lawsuits

In the past 14 months, 10 lawsuits alleging problems with the da Vinci Surgical System have been filed by patients who underwent hysterectomies and other minimally-invasive procedures.

According to Bloomberg.com, a plaintiff in one such case is allegedly still suffering from injuries to her rectal muscles and damages to her sex life four years after undergoing a hysterectomy aided by the da Vinci Surgery robot.

“It didn’t help me one bit, the robot,” the woman said. “It forever changed my life for the worse.” She said she first knew something was amiss when she felt something inside her pop not long after her initial procedure. The sound turned out to be her intestines protruding from her vagina.

This plaintiff is not the only victim of a bad robot surgery complications allegedly caused by the da Vinci Surgery Robot. Prompted by this high number of complaints, the FDA recently sent a survey to hospitals inquiring about possible side effects of using the robot, which procedures surgeons feel the robots are best suited for, and their degree of training in how to use the da Vinci Surgical System.
