Da Vinci Surgery Complication Reports Mount, Along with Robotic Surgery Lawsuits
Media reports continue to bring attention to possible da vinci surgery complications associated with the da Vinci Surgical System. Earlier this week, Bloomberg.com reported that 70 deaths involving da Vinci robot procedures had been filed with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) since 2009. In the past 14 months, Intuitive Surgical has also been named in 10 robotic surgery lawsuits filed on behalf of patients who allegedly suffered serious da Vinci robot complications during hysterectomies and other minimally invasive surgeries.
Da Vinci Surgery Complications
According to Bloomberg.com, use of the da Vinci Surgical System in hysterectomies, prostate removals, gallbladder surgeries, and even heart procedures has grown significantly since Intuitive first brought the device to market in 2000. In 2010, the da Vinci was used in 228,000 U.S. operations. By 2011, that number had grown to about 367,000. According to a healthcare industry analyst interviewed by Bloomberg .com, much of that growth has been driven by patient demand spurred by hospital marketing.
Unfortunately, some patients have sustained serious injuries while undergoing da Vinci procedures. One plaintiff who recently filed a robotic surgery lawsuit against Intuitive told Bloomberg.com that she is still suffering from damaged rectal muscles and a diminished sex life, four years after undergoing a da Vinci robot hysterectomy. Five weeks after her surgery, she felt something pop that turned out to be her intestines protruding from her vagina. “It didn’t help me one bit, the robot,” the 41-year-old woman said. “It forever changed my life for the worse.”
According to Bloomberg.com, da Vinci surgery complications reported to the FDA jumped from 24 in 2009 to 115 last year. The FDA recently sent a survey to hospitals seeking information about adverse events associated with the robot. The survey asks doctors to list possible da Vinci robot complications, as well as which surgeries the robots might be most and least suited for. They were also asked to discuss their training on the da Vinci Surgical System, Bloomberg.com reported.
