Metal-On-Metal Hip Replacement And Cancer Study Findings Limited To Short-Term
Bernstein Liebhard LLP is concerned that individuals who received metal-on-metal hips might be misled by new findings stemming from a study on the relationship between hip replacement and cancer. On April 3, 2012 Bloomberg News published the findings of a new study concluding that patients who received metal-on-metal hips are at no greater risk of developing cancer than those with other types of artificial hips or the general population. However, the study on hip replacement and cancer was conducted over the course of a seven-year period. Given that 93,000 individuals were affected by the August 2010 DePuy ASR hip recall and other metal-on-metal hips are still available, denying the existence of a link between a hip replacement and cancer could have disastrous consequences if no further review is conducted. According to Bloomberg News, researchers from the British Medical Journal (“BMJ”), who conducted the study, concede that a longer-term review is needed to determine the effect of metal debris shedding from metal-on-metal hips given that some tumors take many years to develop.
Duration Is Not Only Flaw In Hip Replacement And Cancer Study
In addition to acknowledging that a long-term review is needed, Ashley Blom, head of the orthopedics department at the University of Bristol in the U.K. and co-author of the BMJ study, also pointed out other flaws in the study to Bloomberg News. According to Blom, the study failed to account for a number of factors, including the fact that metal-on-metal hips were marketed to younger patients, who tend to have lower rates of cancer. Moreover, Blom told Bloomberg News that the long-term biological effects of metal-on-metal hips are unknown. “You need really big numbers and ideally you would want a 20-to-30-year follow-up” in order to correctly assess the link between a metal-on-metal hip replacement and cancer.
Findings From Hip Replacement And Cancer Study At Odds With Mounting Litigation
The DePuy hip replacement lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are actively filing cases on behalf of individuals who have been implanted with metal-on-metal hip implants manufactured by DePuy in the following actions: In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. ASR Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation (“MDL No. 2197”), which is currently underway in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. Pinnacle Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation (“MDL No. 2244”), which is currently underway in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. The lawsuits allege that the ASR hip replacement and the metal-on-metal Pinnacle hip replacement systems were defectively designed. The firm is also investigating cases concerning another metal-on-metal hip implant manufactured by Wright Medical Technology, Inc. Lawsuits involving this hip replacement were recently consolidated in In re: Wright Medical Technology, Inc., Conserve Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation (“MDL No. 2329”), which is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Similar to the DePuy litigations, the Wright Medical hip lawsuits allege that the metal-on-metal Wright Conserve hip replacement systems were defectively designed.
