As lawsuits mount against DePuy Orthopeadics and its parents company, Johnson & Johnson regarding the defective ASR hip replacements, individuals who received the DePuy Pinnacle hip are jumping on the litigation bandwagon.  Similar to the ASR hip replacements, the Pinnacle hip system is also a metal-on-metal device.  Even though the Pinnacle was not part of the August 2010 recall, the immense media attention surrounding the defective ASR hip replacements has prompted recipients of the Pinnacle hip system to initiate legal action.  On March 25, 2011, a motion was filed with the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation to form a DePuy Pinnacle MDL to consolidate all Pinnacle lawsuits pending in federal courts.  If the panel grants the motion, the Pinnacle lawsuits will either be included the DePuy ASR hip implant MDL, which is currently underway or a new DePuy Pinnacle MDL will be formed.  The panel is expected to rule on this motion in May.  Given the disastrous consequences stemming from this medical device debacle, many are speculating as to whether a DePuy Pinnacle recall is soon to follow.  Stay tuned for further updates on both the DePuy Pinnacle litigation and the DePuy ASR hip implant MDL.
