New Data On Skyrocketing Hip Failure Rates Echoed In Bernstein Liebhard LLP’s Clients
On September 15, 2011, The National Joint Registry for England and Wales released its annual report. Alarmingly, the findings revealed that failure rates of metal-on-metal hips, such as the DePuy ASR and certain Pinnacle devices are increasing. Almost 14 percent of patients who receive a metal-on-metal hip implant need revision surgery after seven years. In addition to noting that metal-on-metal hips are failing in large numbers of patients within just a few years, the report also stated that early failure rates are much higher in women than in men.
DePuy ASR Metal-on-Metal Hips Have Highest Failure Rates
The failure rates for the now recalled DePuy ASR metal-on-metal hips are the most troubling. According to the report, the British registry tracked 2,100 patients who received a DePuy ASR metal-on-metal hip device six years ago; approximately 29 percent of those individuals have since had to undergo revision surgery. In 2010, figures from the National Joint Registry prompted the massive DePuy ASR hip recall. However, rising failure rates of metal-on metal hip devices are not limited to the DePuy ASR artificial hips. The registry also found that other metal-on-metal hips, including one of the DePuy Pinnacle hip systems, also suffer from early failure rates when compared with traditional hip replacements.
In response to these findings, Bernstein Liebhard LLP partner Felecia L. Stern commented, “This data confirms what we have been seeing with our own ASR clients. Since we began handling these cases in September 2010, we continue to receive calls from our clients informing us that they have been told by their doctors that they will need revision surgery. Just this week alone, I was notified that eight more of our clients have been scheduled for revision surgery in September. Based on these growing failure rates, I wouldn’t be surprised if at the end of the day we see that the great majority of ASRs fail within the first five years.”
