Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a New York law firm nationally recognized for its consumer protection and mass tort practices, continues to evaluate Zithromax lawsuits on behalf of individuals who took the common antibiotic and experienced complications such as arrhythmia or sudden death. Zithromax, commonly called the Z-Pak, and known generically as azithromycin, is manufactured by Pfizer Inc., and used to treat bacterial infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sore throats and earaches. Bernstein Liebhard recently reported on a May 17, 2012 study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, which found that patients on azithromycin had a significant increased risk of sudden death, especially if they already have a cardiovascular condition.

FDA To Review Z-Pak Side Effects, Which May Include Sudden Death

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently reviewing the results of the study and will communicate any new information on azithromycin and its potential side effects after the agency completes its review. In 2011, the FDA reviewed the risks of QT interval prolongation for drugs like Zithromax. The FDA revised the Warnings and Precautions section of the ZMax drug label (azithromycin extended release for oral suspension) in March 2012 to include new information regarding the risk for QT interval prolongation.

The severity of Z-Pak side effects is especially alarming given the popularity of the antibiotic. According to the New York Times, doctors wrote 55.3 million prescriptions for azithromycin in the United States last year. It is often prescribed over amoxicillin because of its shorter regiment, which involved taking fewer pills over fewer days.

Since announcing its investigation into claims arising from Zithromax side effects, the Firm continues to receive daily requests for case reviews. Bernstein Liebhard partner Felecia L. Stern commented: “many of these calls bring our staff to tears, especially the sudden death cases. These claims hit especially close to home because most of us have used this common antibiotic.”

Individuals who suffered from Z-Pak side effects may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and other injuries. The lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP continue to offer free and confidential evaluations to individuals who suffered from side effects of Zithromax.
