European Health Regulators Concur That Actos Side Effects Include Bladder Cancer
On July 21, 2011, the European Medicines Agency (“EMA”) concluded that Actos side effects include bladder cancer. The diabetes mellitus medication, which is prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes, is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and was recently recalled in France and Germany after a study found Actos side effects include bladder cancer. The active ingredient in Actos is pioglitazone, which helps to lower blood sugar levels in patients suffering from Stage 2 diabetes mellitus. Although the EMA did not recall the drug for the entire European Union, it did confirm that bladder cancer is a side effect of Actos, and that the new warnings are appropriate. Although the EMA recognized the increased risk of cancer as a side effect of Actos, it declined to recall the drug stating it is “a valid treatment option for certain patients with type 2 diabetes” and that the risk of bladder cancer could be reduced by “appropriate patient selection and exclusion.”
Ongoing FDA Investigation Regarding Bladder Cancer And Actos Side Effects
In September 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) announced that it was investigating the possible link between bladder cancer and Actos after early numbers from a continuous 10 year study of Actos side effects conducted by the drug’s manufacturer suggested that bladder cancer is a potential side effect of Actos. The study concluded that long-term pioglitazone users are at a greater risk for developing Actos side effects, particularly bladder cancer. In May 2011, a new study was published by the FDA, which provided more evidence, suggesting that Actos may increase the risk of bladder cancer. Although the FDA is allowing the pioglitazone drug to remain on the market for the time being, it did add information to the drug’s label so that consumers suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus who take pioglitazone are aware that bladder cancer is a potential side effect of Actos.
