Magnetic Toy Recalls
Recently, various magnetic toys have been discovered to have defects making them unsafe for children to play with. In many cases, quality and safety checks failed to detect these magnetic toy defects prior to the products’ sale. As a result, several magnetic toy recalls had to be issued to remove the unsafe toys from the market.
Recalled magnetic toys are extremely dangerous and may cause serious or life-threatening injuries. If a child swallows two or more magnets, or a magnet and another metal object, they can attract to one another through intestinal walls. This traps the magnets in place and can cause serious injuries. When multiple magnets are ingested, surgery is required to remove the magnets, and sometimes, sections of the intestines must be removed. Injuries that children may suffer from recalled magnetic toys include:
- holes (perforations) in the intestines
- intestinal twisting and/or blockage
- blood poisoning (sepsis)
Mattel Magnetic Toy Recall
On November 21, 2006, Mattel Inc. issued a recall on 4.4 million Polly Pocket magnetic toys after the CPSC reported that three children were hospitalized with serious injuries from swallowing tiny magnets that fell off the recalled magnetic toys. Additionally, on August 14, 2007, Mattel Inc. issued recalls for millions of other magnetic toy sets.
According to the recall notices, the magnets contained in the magnetic toy sets, which measure 1/8 of an inch in diameter and are embedded in the hands and feet, plastic clothing, and accessories of the magnetic toys, can come loose. Among the magnetic toys included in the recalls are 7.3 million Polly Pocket Play Sets, 1 million Doggie Day Care Play Sets, 683,000 Barbie and Tanner Play Sets, and 345,000 Batman and One Piece Action toys.
MEGA Brands Magnetix Magnetic Toy Recall
In March 2006, one death and four serious injuries led to the recall of 3.8 million Magnetix building sets. Like the recalled Mattel magnetic toys, the magnets inside the defective Magnetix toys can fall out and be swallowed or aspirated. Since the recall, MEGA Brands has implemented design enhancements to Magnetix toys to correct the magnetic toy defect. Now, the recalled magnetic toys are completely pulled from shelves and only improved products are being sold in stores.
