On July 4, 2011, a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal concluded that Chantix users who have no history of heart disease are at an increased risk of suffering heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular episodes. Researchers concluded that Chantix users face an alarming 72 percent greater risk of suffering a cardiovascular event than those not taking the anti-smoking drug. The results of this latest study have prompted researchers to recommend that the popular smoking cessation drug be recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) and taken off of the market. In response to these findings, Pfizer, the manufacturer of Chantix, and the FDA stated that they are planning to conduct a joint analysis of clinical trials on Chantix heart problems, which is expected next year.

FDA Safety Communication on Chantix Heart Problems

Three weeks ago, the FDA issued a drug safety communication, warning consumers of similar Chantix side effects. Specifically, the FDA warned that Chantix may increase heart problems in users with a history of cardiac episodes. Last month’s FDA alert was based on a study of 700 individuals. This latest study extended that warning to include all Chantix users, after analyzing 14 randomized clinical trials on Chantix heart problems involving 8,200 individuals with no history of cardiovascular disease.

History of Dangerous Chantix Side Effects

The anti-smoking drug has been the subject of widespread scrutiny because of dangerous Chantix side effects. In addition to Chantix heart problems, the drug has also been linked to physiological problems, including depression and suicide. Because of the dangers associated with Chantix side effects, the FDA added a black box warning to the drug’s labeling two years ago. In addition to those Chantix side effects, the latest findings on Chantix heart problems may lead the FDA to take further action.
